This week I am going to talk about just how long does it take to learn to square dance.  About 5 minutes.  No really, about 5 minutes.  Now in that 5 minutes you would only know about two square dance calls, probably Circle Left and Circle Right.  The rest of the story goes like this: Square Dancing is divided into different programs and I am going to talk about what most people consider to be the first program, Mainstream.  There are 68 different calls in the Mainstream Program.  You don’t learn them all at once, it takes time but then everything worth doing takes time.  If you start out in a beginner class then it should take about 4 months to learn all of the the calls.  You will have lots of help and it’s a lot of FUN!! If you want to find a club to learn what all of the Fun, Friendship and Fitness is all about, drop me a line and I’ll help you find a club.

It is true that you can learn to square dance in 5 minutes, but what you don’t really need to know is Mainstream. You don’t need to know Plus, Advanced, or Challenge, any more than you need to learn the 6000 plus moves in Burleson’s Square Dance Encyclopedia! There are figures that you can learn to dance Songs called Singing Calls. Which are somewhat like the Poems that were used in early Square Dancing.

But, then that’s me!I’d rather dance a simple figure to a song that moves my soul than a figure that moves me from point A to point B and has nothing to do with dancing!

I do agree that you do not need to learn PLUS or one of the higher levels to enjoy dancing. One of the things I have witnessed in the past two years is a friend of mine, Dick Rueter putting on the Square Dance ABC dances, They learn about 10 calls in an evening and have fun. However, I will disagree with you on the point about moving from point A to Point B. I rather enjoy that as a dancer.
    Take Care,
    Brian
